Job Hunting Advice
Recently I have been hired by
EdgeWeb Hosting. Through my job hunting over the last year, I think I have added a couple additional things to my personal advice I give people.
The advice is as follows:
- Generally speaking, Dice got me the most hits for IT positions.
- Print your resume, and make sure it still looks good. As a web developer, I didn’t realize my resume didn’t print well at first, and ended up having to fix it. Who owns a printer these days? HR.
- When interviewing at a company, remember that you are also there to figure out if you want to work for the company. Ask questions.
- There are (at least) 3 qualities of a good job. You must have at least 2 of these to enjoy your position:
- Will you enjoy the work?
- Will you enjoy the people you will work with?
- Is the pay sufficient?
- If you like the position, make sure you explicitly tell the employer that while there. Tell them why you like it. Generally speaking if I’m not complaining, I approve. This isn’t sufficient when looking for a job.
