Touchdown in Sri Lanka

We landed in Colombo today.  On the flight from turkey to Sri Lanka Emma & I had a pair of window seats, but there were a string of 4 seat middle rows readily available.  There was a German lady jockeying for one of the rows, and I knew the rest would go fast.  It took a little bit of effort for me to convince Emma to move with me to one of the middle rows.  I watched “World War Z” and they edited otu the plane crash, which I thought was pretty funny.

After we landed in Colombo, we picked up one of the new for-cost visa’s for $35 a piece, and busted through the customs guys.  I was surprised at how quickly we were able to get through.  I think this is because we are traveling off season (not January or December).  After picking up our bags we changed some money at the air port for 127.50 rupees per dollar.  Later I found out this is a pretty good rate, so on future trips I’ll probably change money at the airport again.  It’s also worth mentioning that $50 & $100 bills exchange at a better rate then $20’s and below.

Danarathna picked us up with our cousin (seems like everyone is my cousin…) Kanchana who had a very nice Van with tons of AC.  We drove on the new highway, though some parts were no finished and we had to take some back roads.  It took about 2 hours to get to Hikkaduwa, which is way faster then before when it was closer to 4-6 hours on the coastal route.  It wasn’t quite as scenic however.
