Archive for January, 2010

Despite the drinking the night before, I woke up in time for some diving the next day.  We went to another shipwreck dive site, the Earl of Shafters.  The Earl was an old sail boat that had 3 massive masts.  Compared to the other wreck, this landscape was wide open, with a sandy bottom.  Generally speaking that made it less interesting to behold.  We saw one manta ray, which was pretty cool.  There was a school of fish that were mostly white with yellow tails towards the end of the drive as well.

Shipwreck Diving is Awesome

Friday’s dive was my first shipwreck dive, and I have to say it was pretty awesome.  The ship’s name was the SS Conche, and it was an old oil tanker that went down around 1903.  Supposedly it was one of the first oil tankers.  The front half of the boat took most of the impact, while the backside was largely still intact.

Cheap Eats

Thursday I finally woke up early enough to go diving (8:30 AM).  Though we did not see any big fish or predators like I did on Monday, there were hundreds of smaller fish swimming just above the large rock that was the main attracktion of the dive site.  The rock was about 16 meters tall, and took about 40 minutes to swim around.  The deepest part of the dive was about 20 meters.

Book Reviews

Suffice to say, I did not wake up in time to go diving on Wednesday either.  I went with Danarathna to a used book store, that had more German books then English ones.  I had finished the two books I had brought: ‘The Triumph of Politics,’ by David Stockman; and ‘The World is Flat,’ by Thomas Friedman.

Election Day

I was hoping to go diving again on Tuesday morning, but I woke up too late.  In addition to the normal hoopla, today was the national election.  There was a lot of tension around, both optimistic, and dreadful.  The election was between the current president, and the general who recently finished off the civil war. Big Girl Party

Monday morning I went diving again.  I have to say, the 9 o’clock dive is a great way to start a day.  It’s not particularly exerting, though I do still seem to be still the next day (though I am beginning to think that is related to the mattress I sleep on).  Getting out onto a boat early, and then into the water around 10:30 is also great.  The water is cool when you are 15 meters under the sea, which can be a nice change of pace from the surface. Farmer’s Market, Take Two

Sunday was fairly slow.  We went to the farmer’s market, and this time we were armed with a shopping list from my aunt.  I think we ended up spending around $15 USD.  We got: potatoes, onions, green chillies, leeks, okra (yuk), green beans, mangoes, Chinese style eggplants, another type of eggplant (small and round, but not very purple), cabbage, nareal (a greenish root vegetable that tasted like cabbage as far as I could tell), tomatoes, cucumbers, black pepper corns, limes, carrots, and sugar cane.

My Aunt scolded us for getting the sugar cane because there was some in the backyard. Read the rest of this post »

Sometimes I Question My Profession

Saturday’s two dives in the morning were not quite as memorable as my first dive ever.  The first dive of the morning was deeper, about 14 meters.  Jane & I went with another diver named Marcus who was German, and his diving guide, though once the dive started we did not really stay together.  We practiced some diving skills, like how to do an emergency ascent, and taking the kit off and on under water.  After we swam around for about 40 minutes, which see4ms like a pretty standard dive at this depth.  We saw a couple bigger fish, though really I don’t know the names of any of them. First Dive

On Friday I went open water diving to 12 meters for the first time.  The dive site we went to was simply called ‘cave.’  After gearing up, and rolling back first off the boat, Jane & I swam over to the anchor line, and deflated our Buoyancy Control Devices (BCD), which dropped us into the ocean.  Hanging on to the anchor line, inches below the surface, I looked upon an expansive green ocean, with no floor in sight, and thought, “I’ve got to be crazy to go down there.” I paused for a bit, until I eventually surfaced with Jane. Drama Means More Drinking at the Beach

Thursday was supposed to be my first open water scuba dive, but there was some early morning drama at Poseidon.  I’m not exactly sure what happened, but Jane had stormed off in the morning quite upset.  I think she was having some beef with the owner that morning over the way he ran his business.  I was told my lesson would resume the next day.
